The Postman (1997)

The Postman (1997) is a post-apocalyptic adventure film directed by and starring Kevin Costner. Set in the year 2013, after a devastating war has left the United States in ruins, the film follows a drifter (Costner) who stumbles upon an old postal uniform and mailbag.
Pretending to be a government mail carrier from the restored United States, he begins delivering old letters, providing hope and a sense of order to scattered communities that have fallen under the control of a brutal warlord, General Bethlehem (Will Patton).
As the drifter’s lie grows, he inadvertently inspires a rebellion against Bethlehem’s tyrannical rule, giving rise to a movement of hope and unity. The film explores themes of leadership, the power of symbols, and the human need for connection, even in the bleakest of times.
Though The Postman was initially met with criticism for its length and pacing, it has since developed a following for its earnestness and portrayal of hope in a dystopian world.

It also marks a continuation of Costner’s exploration of epic themes, following his earlier success with Dances with Wolves (1990).
