The Last Duel (2021)

The Last Duel (2021) is a historical drama directed by Ridley Scott, based on the true story of the last legally sanctioned duel in medieval France. Set in the 14th century, the film follows the lives of Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon), a respected knight, and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), his former friend and a squire.
The story takes a dark turn when Carrouges’ wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer), accuses Le Gris of assaulting her. Marguerite’s courage in speaking out puts her life at risk, as women’s voices were often disregarded at the time, and the accusation threatens both men’s honor and reputations.
The king orders a trial by combat, where Carrouges and Le Gris must face each other in a duel to the death. This fight will decide not only their fate but also Marguerite’s, as she will be executed if her husband loses, signaling that her accusation was false. The film examines themes of honor, justice, and the brutality of medieval society, as well as the perspectives and biases of each character involved.

The Last Duel presents a compelling narrative that explores gender roles, power, and the complex pursuit of truth in a time when justice was often harsh and unforgiving.
