Penny Dreadful (2014)
Penny Dreadful (2014–2016) is a British-American horror drama television series created by John Logan. Set in Victorian London, the show intertwines classic horror literature characters with a dark, twisted storyline. The central characters include Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), a powerful medium; Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), an explorer seeking his missing daughter; Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), a former American sharpshooter with a secret; and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), who is immortal thanks to his portrait.
The series delves into the supernatural, weaving together elements from gothic horror novels such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Vanessa Ives, in particular, is at the center of the show, battling inner demons and dark forces, both from her past and from the supernatural realm.
Alongside her, the characters confront their own personal demons, face horrific monsters, and seek to prevent an impending evil from destroying the world.
The show is known for its rich atmosphere, combining Victorian gothic aesthetics with deep psychological themes, exploring love, loss, guilt, and redemption. Penny Dreadful received praise for its performances, particularly Eva Green’s portrayal of Vanessa Ives, and its unique blend of horror and drama, though it concluded after three seasons in 2016.
