High Life (2018)
High Life (2018) is a haunting science fiction film directed by Claire Denis that follows Monte (Robert Pattinson) and his daughter, Willow, as the last survivors on a space mission drifting toward a black hole. Monte is a convict who, along with other prisoners, was sent on this mission as part of a scientific experiment focused on exploring energy extraction from black holes.
The crew, which includes Dr. Dibs (Juliette Binoche), is subjected to disturbing and unethical fertility experiments under Dibs’s control. Over time, tensions, isolation, and the psychological strains of space take a toll, leading to violence and the eventual deaths of the other crew members. Monte, who has chosen a path of celibacy, eventually finds himself as the sole caregiver for his infant daughter, Willow, after the others perish.
As Monte and Willow journey alone in the depths of space, the film delves into themes of survival, morality, and the boundaries of human desire. With its slow, atmospheric pace and intense, thought-provoking scenes, High Life explores existential questions about humanity and the limits of scientific ambition.
