The Woman King (2022)

The Woman King (2022) is a historical epic film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, inspired by true events in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful African states of the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows General Nanisca (played by Viola Davis), the leader of the Agojie, an all-female group of elite warriors who protect the kingdom.
The film centers on Nanisca’s efforts to train a new generation of warriors to defend their homeland against external threats, including the slave trade, while navigating internal political struggles. When a young woman named Nawi (played by Thuso Mbedu) is chosen to join the Agojie, she embarks on a journey of personal growth and discovers her strength, loyalty, and identity.
As the kingdom faces external invasions and the looming threat of the European slave traders, Nanisca and the Agojie must battle not only external forces but also deal with their own pasts.
