Creepshow 2 (1987)

Creepshow 2 (1987)
Released on this day, May 1, 1987. Following the success of Creepshow (1982), the sequel had only story credits by Stephen King and George A. Romero. Michael Gornick, a long-time collaborator of Romero, took over the directorial responsibilities.

The original five-storyline structure method was jettisoned for three. The two stories that didn’t make the final film were “Pinfall” (brilliantly reproduced in comic book form on the Arrow Blu-ray release) and “Cat from Hell,” which eventually appeared in the “Tales from the Darkside” movie.

Three stories remained in the final cut. In the first, a wooden statue of a Native American comes to life to exact vengeance on the murderer of his elderly owners. In the second, four teens are stranded on a raft on a lake with a blob that is hungry. And in the third, a hit and run woman is terrorized by the hitchhiker she accidentally killed… or did she?

All the segments effectively capture the essence of EC Comics. Personally, I find “The Raft” to be the most captivating, though the other two are also commendable efforts.

Creepshow 2 (1987) made $14 million off a $3.5 million budget.
