Soldier 1998

Soldier 1998

Overlooked science fiction action film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson starring Kurt Russell, Jason Scott Lee, Jason Isaacs, Connie Nielsen, Sean Pertwee and Gary Busey. It follows a battle-hardened supersoldier dumped on a desolate junk planet and left for dead. Here he must confront his past and fight for his survival when a new generation of genetically engineered warriors arrives to eliminate him. Solider is raw and gritty, blending practical effects with CGI, with a focus on realistic violence and a dark, dystopian atmosphere. It also plays homage to classic sci-fi films like Blade Runner and Aliens – A Spinner from Blade Runner can be seen wreckage on the junk planet, and Russell’s character had took part in the battles referred to in Roy Batty’s monologue from Blade Runner. Soldier is now a cult film with every sci-fi movie trope you can list in the script and it’s glorious. It bombed magnificantly at the box office grossing £14M from a budget of $60M.
