The Last Starfighter (1984)

The Last Starfighter is a classic science fiction adventure film directed by Nick Castle. It is one of the earliest movies to use extensive CGI for its space battle sequences, which made it a groundbreaking film for its time.
The story follows Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), a teenager living in a trailer park who is exceptionally skilled at playing a video arcade game called Starfighter. One day, after achieving a record-breaking score, Alex is approached by a mysterious man named Centauri (Robert Preston), who reveals that the game was actually a test to find potential star pilots to fight in a real interstellar war.
Alex is recruited by an alien defense force called the Star League to help fight against the evil Ko-Dan Empire, which threatens the galaxy. He is taken to the distant planet of Rylos, where he learns that he is the last hope for the Star League. With his piloting skills, Alex must fly a powerful starship, the Gunstar, and lead a final battle against the Ko-Dan Armada to save the galaxy.
The Last Starfighter is beloved for its charming mix of adventure, humor, and heart. The film’s themes of heroism, coming-of-age, and the idea of being “chosen” resonate with many viewers, and it holds a nostalgic appeal for fans of 1980s sci-fi. While the special effects were cutting-edge for its time, the film is also remembered for its likable characters and feel-good story.

Though not a massive box-office hit upon release, The Last Starfighter has since become a cult favorite and is seen as an important film in the history of sci-fi cinema, especially for its pioneering use of CGI.
