A COMPLETE UNKNOWN (2024) – THE MAKING OF A MYTH
A Complete Unknown (2024) traces the lightning-fast rise of Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet), a cryptic troubadour who lands in 1961 New York with little more than a guitar and a hunger to connect with Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy).
Hospital-bound and fading, Guthrie hears Dylan’s tribute song, sparking mentorship from Pete Seeger (Edward Norton), who ushers the kid into the folk underworld.
Chalamet embodies Dylan’s duality—shy yet defiant—as he wins over the Village with poetic anthems like “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” Romancing Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning) and harmonizing with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), Dylan’s star soars, fueled by manager Albert Grossman’s (Dan Fogler) savvy.
Mangold’s lens captures the era’s texture—dingy clubs, protest chants—while Chalamet’s live vocals, all grit and soul, anchor every frame. But fame’s cage tightens; Dylan bristles at folk’s rigid rules, his disillusionment simmering as fans crown him a prophet.
A chance encounter with Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook) lights the fuse—Cash sees the fire behind Dylan’s mask, pushing him toward rebellion. The film crescendos at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, where Dylan’s electric set—blaring “Maggie’s Farm”—splits the crowd, birthing a rock legend amid chaos.
A Complete Unknown isn’t just a biopic; it’s a portrait of an artist outrunning his own myth, a restless spirit who turned music into a mirror for a turbulent world.
