Frontier (2016) Jason Momoa, Greg Bryk

Frontier is a historical drama series set in the late 18th century, during the fur trade era in North America. The show, which premiered on Netflix, follows the violent and treacherous world of the fur trade as it unfolds on the wild and untamed frontiers of Canada. With a raw and immersive depiction of the conflicts between competing fur trading companies, Native American tribes, and settlers, Frontier explores the dark side of this economic boom and the brutal tactics used to control the region.

The series centers on Declan Harp (Jason Momoa), a half-Irish, half-Native American man who becomes an outlaw and a fierce rival of the British East India Company. Harp is driven by revenge and a desire to take down the corrupt trading companies that have been exploiting both the land and its people. As the story unfolds, Harp forms uneasy alliances with Indigenous tribes, former criminals, and settlers, all of whom vie for control of the lucrative fur trade.

With intense action, brutal fight sequences, and a rich, atmospheric setting, Frontier delves deeply into themes of power, survival, and the moral complexities of the era. The show doesn’t shy away from depicting the harsh realities of frontier life: ruthless violence, betrayal, and exploitation of both the environment and its people.

Jason Momoa delivers a powerful performance as the conflicted and charismatic Declan Harp, and the supporting cast, including Landon Liboiron, Alun Armstrong, and Zoe Boyle, helps bring the brutal world of the fur trade to life. Frontier stands out as a raw, action-packed historical drama that offers a stark look at the birth of modern Canada through the lens of power struggles, war, and survival.
