Silence

Silence (2016) Liam Neeson, Komatsu Nana

Today is the premiere of Silence, an American historical drama film from 2016, directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Jay Cocks and Scorsese, based on the 1966 novel of the same name written by Shūsaku Endō. Starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano and Ciarán Hinds.

Second half of the 17th century. Two young Portuguese Jesuits travel to Japan in search of their mentor, the famous missionary Father Ferreira. The latest rumors indicate that, after being persecuted and tortured, Ferreira has renounced his faith, something difficult to believe for the priests who set out in search of him. In Japan, they themselves will experience the torment and violence with which the Japanese authorities persecute Christians, torturing them until they apostatize or die.

Silent, painful and haunting – Silence is a deeply spiritual work set in 17th century Japan, when Christianity was severely persecuted. Two young Jesuits (Garfield and Driver) journey to Japan in search of their teacher (Liam Neeson), who is believed to have apostatized.

🌸 Komatsu Nana plays Monica – a Japanese girl who carries her Christian faith in silence and suffering, representing thousands of believers forced to choose between faith and death.

🎥 Under Scorsese’s hands, the film does not follow an action or dramatic narrative but leans towards the inner self, posing the painful question: “What does faith mean when God is silent?”

📌 With its delicate images, quiet sounds and inner struggles of people before sin, Silence is not for the masses – but for those who truly want to contemplate the faith, sacrifice and silence of God.

📅 Released: 2016 | Genre: Drama – History – Religion
