Corbridge Hoard & Jug

This hoard of 160 Roman aureus coins was discovered beneath the floor of a Roman house in Corbridge, Northumberland, in 1911 CE.

Hidden inside a bronze jug, the coins were cleverly concealed by two bronze coins lodged in the neck of the vessel. When archaeologists lifted the jug from the ground, the weight of the gold caused it to break, revealing the treasure within.

Dated to around 160 CE, the hoard offers a fascinating glimpse into wealth storage and security in Roman Britain.

The jug was loaned by English Heritage (Trustees of the Corbridge Excavation Fund) and is now housed in the British Museum, London.
