George, a brave Jack Russell Terrier barely knee-high, saw the threat and made a split-second decision. Without hesitation, he leapt into the fray, standing between the children and the attacking dogs.

Outmatched in size but not in courage, George barked fiercely, lunged with all his might, and threw himself at the pit bulls. His small body darted and weaved as he did everything in his power to shield the children from harm.

The battle was brutal. George fought valiantly, his determination fueling every movement. But the size and strength of the pit bulls were overwhelming. Despite his fierce bravery, George’s body was torn apart by the savage attack.

When the dust settled, the children were safe. Not a single one had been harmed, thanks to George’s heroic actions. But George, with injuries too severe for even the best medical care to save him, was put to rest that day.

Though his life was tragically short, his courage would never be forgotten. His sacrifice didn’t go unnoticed — the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Animals awarded him their highest honor for bravery. Across the sea, the prestigious PDSA Gold Medal — often called the animal equivalent of the George Cross — was placed in his name.

Today, a statue stands proudly in Manaia. A quiet monument to a small dog who wasn’t afraid to stand against fear itself. His legacy endures, not in the size of his body, but in the size of his heart.
