Moche Feline Trumpet from Ancient Peru (100 BC–AD 500)

This coiled trumpet, crafted in the form of a snarling feline face, reflects the artistic and symbolic sophistication of the Moche culture.
Originating from Chimbote in the Santa Valley along Peru’s north coast, the instrument was created between 100 BC and AD 500.
Made from ceramic and decorated with pigment, it likely held ceremonial or ritual importance, possibly invoking the power and mystique of the feline—a common motif in Moche iconography. Today, this striking artifact resides in the Art Institute of Chicago.
