Thutmose I’s Coffin Reused for Pinodjem I

In a remarkable instance of ancient reuse, the inner coffin of King Thutmose I (1506–1493 BCE) was later repurposed for the burial of Pinodjem I, High Priest of Amun and self-proclaimed pharaoh of the 21st Dynasty (c. 1070–1025 BCE).

Pinodjem I, son of Piankh, initially held religious authority as High Priest of Amun but gradually consolidated political power. By 1054 BCE, he had adopted full royal titulary, and his reign was officially recognized alongside that of Smendes I, the ruling king in Tanis.

The reuse of Thutmose I’s coffin underscores both the scarcity of resources in this turbulent era and the symbolic significance of connecting to Egypt’s illustrious royal past.
