Mummy Box of Peftjaoeneith

National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden
Accession No. AMM 5-e
Late Period, Twenty-Sixth Dynasty (c. 650 BC)
Provenance: Saqqara (?)
Material: Wood with polychromy
Dimensions: 36 × 63 × 240 cm
The mummy box of Peftjaoeneith ranks among the finest pieces in the Leiden collection. Crafted from exceptionally thick and heavy wood, it is richly decorated in vibrant polychrome.
In resource-scarce Egypt, such a coffin would have represented an immense expense—fitting for Peftjaoeneith, who held the high office of inspector of the temple domains.
The lid is adorned with figures of deities and inscriptions drawn from the Book of the Dead, while its underside features the sky goddess Nut, her black body sprinkled with stars, protecting the deceased for eternity.
