The Hill Fort of Monte Mozinho

The hill fort of Monte Mozinho, often called the “City of the Dead,” is an important archaeological site located near Penafiel in northern Portugal. Dating back to the late 1st century AD, it was originally built by the native Castro people and later occupied by the Romans.
The settlement is notable for its combination of indigenous circular stone houses and Roman rectangular buildings, showing the cultural fusion that occurred during the Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula.
The site once functioned as a fortified village, with defensive walls and strategic views over the surrounding landscape. Today, Monte Mozinho stands as one of the largest and most significant hill forts in Portugal, offering valuable insight into the daily life, architecture, and cultural transition of its ancient inhabitants.
