Maya Ruler Figurine with Elaborate Regalia

This ceramic figurine depicts a lord from the Maya civilization of Guatemala, dating to 600–900 AD, dressed in elaborate regalia. Such figurines capture the intricate and weighty attire of Maya rulers.

The belt ornament, shaped like a head with three celts, resembles the set of plaques on display here. The figurine is coated with Maya blue pigment—a mixture of indigo and palygorskite clay—which evokes the green of quetzal feathers in the headdress as well as the jade pectorals, earrings, and belt ornaments.

Holding a shield in his left hand, the ruler may be commemorating a military victory or reenacting a triumph.
