The Mask of Zorro (1998)

The Mask of Zorro is a swashbuckling action-adventure film directed by Martin Campbell. Set in 19th-century California, the movie follows two generations of the masked vigilante, Zorro, who fights against oppression and injustice.
The legendary Zorro, Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), has been imprisoned for twenty years by his arch-nemesis, the ruthless Spanish governor Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson). Upon escaping, de la Vega seeks a successor to carry on his legacy and avenge the wrongs committed against his family.
He finds a promising candidate in the young and reckless thief Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas). Under de la Vega’s mentorship, Alejandro trains to become the new Zorro and sets out to stop Montero’s evil plans, while also falling in love with Montero’s daughter, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who is unaware of her true parentage.
The film blends exhilarating sword fights, romantic intrigue, and humor, set against a backdrop of social upheaval. The Mask of Zorro is praised for its charismatic performances, particularly Banderas as the charming and daring Zorro, and Zeta-Jones in her breakout role.
