Papillon is a biographical drama directed by Michael Noer, based on the real-life story of French convict Henri “Papillon” Charriรจre. The film is a remake of the 1973 classic and follows the gripping journey of Papillon (played by Charlie Hunnam), a safecracker who is wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious French penal colony of Devil’s Island.
While imprisoned, Papillon befriends Louis Dega (Rami Malek), a wealthy but vulnerable counterfeiter, and the two form an unlikely bond. Determined to escape the brutal conditions of the prison, Papillon devises daring plans for freedom, risking everything to break free from the harsh and inhumane system. The film highlights themes of survival, loyalty, and the human spirit’s relentless pursuit of freedom, supported by strong performances and breathtaking visuals that capture both the beauty and terror of the island.
This version of Papillon offers a modern retelling of the classic tale, focusing on the emotional depth of the characters and their enduring hope in the face of extreme adversity.
