Children of the Corn (1984) is a horror film based on Stephen King’s 1977 short story of the same name. Directed by Fritz Kiersch, the film tells the story of a couple, Burt (Peter Horton) and Vicky (Linda Hamilton), who stumble upon a rural town in Nebraska where all the adults have been murdered by the children, who follow a cult-like religion led by a boy named Isaac (John Franklin). The children worship a malevolent entity known as “He Who Walks Behind the Rows,” and they sacrifice anyone over the age of 18 to ensure a bountiful corn harvest.
The movie is known for its eerie atmosphere and themes of religious fanaticism and isolation. Despite its low budget and mixed reviews upon release, Children of the Corn gained a cult following, leading to numerous sequels and adaptations over the years. The film remains a key part of 1980s horror cinema, celebrated for its unsettling premise and memorable performances by the child actors, especially Franklin as the creepy, authoritative Isaac.
While the movie deviates from King’s original story in some aspects, it still captures the chilling idea of a community where children turn against their elders under supernatural influence.
