Morbius (2022)
Morbius (2022) is a superhero film directed by Daniel Espinosa, based on the Marvel Comics character Dr. Michael Morbius. The film stars Jared Leto in the titular role and is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), focusing on antiheroes and villains from Spider-Man’s world.
The story follows Dr. Michael Morbius, a brilliant but gravely ill biochemist who suffers from a rare blood disorder. In his desperate attempt to find a cure, Morbius conducts an experimental treatment using vampire bat DNA. While the experiment appears to succeed in curing his illness, it also gives him vampiric abilities—enhanced strength, speed, echolocation, and a thirst for human blood. As Morbius grapples with his new identity, he struggles to control his violent urges, leading to moral conflicts and dangerous consequences.
As the film progresses, Morbius faces enemies both new and old, including his former friend Milo (Matt Smith), who undergoes a similar transformation but embraces the darker aspects of their condition. The film touches on themes of science, morality, and the consequences of playing with nature.
Morbius combines elements of superhero action with horror, portraying the character as a tragic antihero. The film was met with mixed reviews, with praise for Jared Leto’s performance and some of the action sequences, but it also faced criticism for its uneven tone and pacing. Nonetheless, Morbius added to the expanding universe of Marvel characters portrayed in film, offering a darker and more complex figure compared to traditional superheroes.
