Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (2016) is a fantasy film directed by David Yates and written by J.K. Rowling. It is the first installment in the “Fantastic Beasts” film series and a prequel to the Harry Potter series. The film introduces audiences to the magical world of New York City in the 1920s, expanding the rich lore created by Rowling.
The story follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a British magizoologist who arrives in New York with a suitcase full of magical creatures. When some of these creatures escape, Newt must track them down with the help of a few newfound friends: Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), a No-Maj (non-magical person) baker; Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), an ambitious and demoted Auror; and her sister, Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), a Legilimens capable of reading minds.
As Newt and his friends search for the escaped creatures, they uncover a larger and darker threat. An obscurial, a destructive force caused by suppressed magical abilities, is wreaking havoc in the city. This phenomenon attracts the attention of the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA), led by President Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo), as well as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, who is secretly plotting to overthrow the non-magical world.
The film combines whimsical adventures with darker, more serious themes of intolerance and secrecy within the magical community. Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of Newt Scamander brings a charming and endearing quality to the character, while the ensemble cast adds depth and warmth to the story.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is praised for its imaginative world-building, captivating visual effects, and engaging storyline. It offers a fresh perspective on the magical universe, appealing to both fans of the Harry Potter series and new audiences alike. The film successfully sets the stage for the subsequent adventures in the “Fantastic Beasts” series, delving deeper into the history and intricacies of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world.
