Pilgrimage (2017)
Pilgrimage (2017) is a historical drama set in 13th century Ireland. The film follows a group of monks who are tasked with transporting a sacred relic to Rome. The relic, believed to have powerful divine properties, is a stone from the shrine of St. Matthias, the apostle who replaced Judas Iscariot. This journey quickly becomes perilous as they face numerous threats.
The monks, led by Brother Geraldus (Stanley Weber), believe that the relic is vital to securing the church’s influence in a time of political turmoil. Accompanying Geraldus are Brother Ciaran (John Lynch), the young novice Brother Diarmuid (Tom Holland), and a mute lay-brother (Jon Bernthal) with a violent past.
As they travel through the harsh and unforgiving landscape, they encounter a series of brutal challenges. These include attacks from Norman soldiers and Irish clansmen, both of whom seek to seize the relic for their own purposes. The monks are forced to confront their faith, the violence within their ranks, and the true nature of the relic they are protecting.
Throughout their journey, Brother Diarmuid’s faith and innocence are tested as he witnesses the brutality of the world. The mute lay-brother emerges as a fierce protector, using his formidable combat skills to defend the group. However, the further they travel, the more the group is torn apart by internal and external conflicts.
The film is a gritty exploration of faith, sacrifice, and survival, set against the backdrop of medieval Europe. With its intense action sequences and dramatic storytelling, Pilgrimage delves into the moral and spiritual struggles of its characters as they undertake their arduous and dangerous mission.
