The Northman (2022)

The Northman is a visually breathtaking and intense epic that seamlessly combines historical realism with deep mythological themes. It tells a raw, powerful tale of revenge, identity, and fate, deeply rooted in Viking culture and Norse mythology.

The film follows Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), a Viking warrior on a relentless quest to avenge the murder of his father. As a child, Amleth witnesses the shocking betrayal and assassination of his father, King Aurvandil War-Raven (Ethan Hawke), at the hands of his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang). Seizing the throne, Fjölnir also marries Amleth’s mother, Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman).

Fleeing for his life, young Amleth swears an oath of vengeance, vowing:
“I will avenge you, Father. I will save you, Mother. I will kill you, Fjölnir.”
Years later, Amleth emerges as a feared berserker raider, consumed by his vow of revenge. When he learns that Fjölnir has been overthrown and now resides in exile on a remote Icelandic farmstead, Amleth infiltrates his world by posing as a slave.

There, he allies with Olga of the Birch Forest (Anya Taylor-Joy), a resourceful and enigmatic woman. Together, they plot Fjölnir’s downfall. But as Amleth draws closer to fulfilling his destiny, he uncovers disturbing truths about his family and the heavy cost of revenge.
