The Last Kingdom (2022)

The Last Kingdom is a historical drama television series based on Bernard Cornwell’s book series The Saxon Stories. The show originally premiered on BBC Two in 2015 and later moved to Netflix for its subsequent seasons, concluding with its fifth and final season in 2022.

Set in 9th and 10th century England during the Viking invasions, The Last Kingdom follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon), a Saxon nobleman who is captured and raised by the Viking warlord Ragnar the Fearless. Uhtred is torn between two worlds: the Saxon kingdom of Wessex, which is his birthright, and the Viking culture that raised him. This internal conflict forms the central theme of the series, as Uhtred navigates loyalty, revenge, and his quest to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburg.

The show dramatizes key events of the Viking Age, including the rise of Alfred the Great (David Dawson), the King of Wessex, who is depicted as a visionary leader trying to unite the fragmented kingdoms of England against the Viking threat. Throughout the series, Uhtred and other characters must navigate complex relationships, battles, and shifting allegiances as they struggle for power and survival.

The series is known for its gritty portrayal of medieval warfare, political intrigue, and its exploration of themes like loyalty, faith, and identity. The Last Kingdom mixes historical figures and events with fictional characters and storylines, providing a dramatic and action-packed narrative.
The show has been praised for its compelling characters, strong performances (particularly by Dreymon as Uhtred), and its ability to bring the turbulent period of Viking invasions to life. Fans of historical dramas like Vikings or Game of Thrones often enjoy The Last Kingdom for its intense action and rich storytelling.
In addition to the series, a film titled The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die was released in 2023, continuing Uhtred’s journey and providing closure to the saga.
