Silence, a 2016 American historical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Jay Cocks and Scorsese, is released today. It is based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Shūsaku Endō. It stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano, and Ciarán Hinds.
The second half of the 17th century. Two young Portuguese Jesuits travel to Japan in search of their mentor, the famous missionary Father Ferreira. Recent rumors indicate that, after being persecuted and tortured, Ferreira has renounced his faith, something difficult to believe for the priests who seek his help. In Japan, they will experience the torment and violence with which the Japanese authorities persecute Christians, torturing them until they play or die.
The story is set in the second half of the 17th century, when two young Portuguese Jesuits travel to Japan hoping to find their mentor, Father Ferreira, a missing missionary who is rumored to have renounced his faith after being persecuted and tortured. Refusing to believe it, priests embark on a perilous search in a country where Christianity is brutally repressed. There, they will experience in flesh suffering, faith pushed to the limit, and God’s silence in the face of human cruelty.
