Underworld
(2003) is a dark fantasy-action film directed by Len Wiseman, starring Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, and Michael Sheen. It blends elements of gothic horror, action, and romance, set against the backdrop of an ancient war between vampires and werewolves (referred to as Lycans).

The story follows Selene (played by Beckinsale), a highly skilled vampire warrior known as a Death Dealer, whose primary mission is to hunt down Lycans. Selene discovers that the centuries-long conflict between vampires and Lycans is more complex than she had been led to believe, especially after she becomes drawn to a human, Michael Corvin (played by Speedman), who is caught in the middle of the struggle. Michael turns out to be a key figure in the Lycan’s plan to create a hybrid of the two species.

The film is noted for its stylish aesthetic, dark tone, and highly choreographed action sequences. The blend of supernatural lore with modern-day urban settings helped Underworld stand out, and it garnered a strong cult following. Kate Beckinsale’s portrayal of Selene became iconic, and the film’s success led to multiple sequels and prequels, expanding the universe’s mythology of vampires, Lycans, and their ancient war.
