Avatar 3, the upcoming epic science fiction film, is directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. It serves as the third installment in Cameron’s Avatar franchise and is a sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).
Cameron is producing the film alongside Jon Landau. The screenplay was crafted by James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
The film features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, and Giovanni Ribisi, reprising their roles from previous films.
New additions to the cast include Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, and Oona Chaplin. The potential title considered for the film is “Avatar: The Seed Bearer,” as stated by Cameron.
James Cameron expressed interest in creating sequels to Avatar shortly after the success of the first film in 2010. Originally aiming for a 2015 release, the development process expanded to include a total of four sequels due to the need for groundbreaking underwater performance capture technology.
This required extensive delays to perfect the writing, pre-production, and visual effects. Filming for Avatar 3 began simultaneously with Avatar: The Way of Water in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, and concluded in late December 2020, after over three years of production.
