Hero (2002) is a visually stunning martial arts epic directed by Zhang Yimou. The film stars Jet Li as Nameless, a skilled warrior in ancient China, who is summoned to meet the King of Qin (Chen Daoming) after supposedly defeating the king’s three greatest enemies: Sky (Donnie Yen), Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung), and Broken Sword (Tony Leung).
Set during the Warring States period, the story is told in a Rashomon-style narrative, where Nameless recounts different versions of his battles with the assassins. As the king listens, he begins to question Nameless’s motives and the truth behind the stories. Each version is visually distinct, with striking color schemes used to symbolize different themes and emotions—such as loyalty, love, betrayal, and sacrifice.
Hero was a critical and commercial success worldwide, gaining recognition for its artistry and storytelling. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and is often regarded as one of the most beautiful and profound films in the wuxia genre.
