Viking Woman and Dog Found in Rare Boat Burial in Norway

Archaeologists from the Arctic University Museum of Norway have uncovered a rare Viking Age boat burial on Senja Island, situated along Norway’s northern coast.
Dating to approximately 900–950 CE, the grave contained the skeleton of a woman, accompanied by the remains of her dog, indicating a burial of high status and ceremonial importance.
The discovery offers valuable insight into Viking funerary customs, particularly the practice of boat burials, which were typically reserved for elite individuals.
The inclusion of the dog suggests a close personal bond and may symbolize loyalty, protection, or a companion for the afterlife.
